Vaulting competitions start with performance of the compulsory test.
The compulsory exercises are:

Basic seat, flag and stand are static exercises, which should be held for four full strides. Vault-on, mill, scissors and flag are dynamic movements. Each compulsory is scored on a scale from 0-10. The horse is also scored.

Technical test

The technical test is a part of the individual vaulting competition and it is performed in the second round. The lenght of the technical test is one minute and the test consists of five technical exercises and additional freestyle exercises. The technical exercises are from the following categories of motor skills:

2. Timing/Coordination
3. Suppleness
4. Balance
5. Strenght

The technical exercises are designated by the FEI Vaulting Committee for a two-year period and the exercises for 2009-2010 are:

Freetest

Vaulters compose their own freestyle, which consists of static and dynamic exercises. In team vaulting the free test is a combination of single, double and triple exercises. For example the variety of positions and directions of movements affect the composition score. In addition to composition also the degree of difficulty, performance and horse are scored. The time limit for the individual freetest is one minute, for pair vaulting two minutes and for team freetest four minutes.
